Biography
Born on October 3rd, 1958, in Jurmala.
Until 1977, Silins studied at the Janis Rozentals Riga Art High School.
In 1984, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia with a diploma thesis painting “Against the Wind” (1984), which was supervised by the Latvian painting classic and AAL professor Imants Vecozols.
For some time Silins had worked as a teacher at the Mersrags Secondary School (1984-1986), and after as a painting teacher at the Riga Secondary School of Design and Art.
Silins has been a member of the Artists' Union since 1985.
He has been actively participating in exhibitions since 1981, both in the local scene and international.
Silins’ works are in many state museums and private collections in Latvia and abroad: USA, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Turkey, Russia, France and Australia.
Artistic description
Karlis Silins' work is not monotonous - it moves from expressionism to cubism. The monochrome palette is also not his "field" - the interplay of colors dominates in the paintings, which is complemented by various textures and rhythms of lines. The themes include stylized landscape motifs, figural compositions and still life in expressive color fields.
Interesting facts
Silins creates his paintings in a workshop in Pardaugava, which has a historical family value - it previously belonged to his father, the painter Herberts Ernests Silins. The son bought it from his father, a studio in an apartment house in the neighborhood, where other famous Latvian creative people worked; Boriss Berzins, Jazeps Pigoznis, Sandra Krastina and others.
