“Art is the uniting moonbeam bridge between now and forever.â€

The exhibition
My flag is color reveals the rich and colorful world of the painter Valdis Bušs (1924-2014). The natural landscapes and waters, ports and streets – they all are painted not only as places, motifs, and themes but as artists’ personal feelings, expressed through the energy of the language of color and the power of brushstrokes. Vitality permeates Bušs’ painting.
Valdis Bušs was a native from Latgale, he began his painting studies at the Art Academy of Latvia but never managed to obtain a diploma. Nevertheless, painting became an essential part of his life in the 1970s, and he continued to paint until the end of his life. The artist spent most of his life in Jurmala, working both in the plein-air and in his workshop. Bušs’ creative heritage can be measured in several thousand studies and paintings. Reminiscences from French early 20th-century painting can be felt in his specific artistic manner, it dominates the simplicity and stylization of the forms and serves the endless possibilities provided by the color palette.
The exposition includes more than fifty paintings selected from various creative stages of Bušs' work, revealing the wide range of topics and the specifics of his artistic style. A special place is dedicated to the early stages. For the first time, the artworks made in the early 1950s (while the artist with his family was in deportation in the Far East) are exhibited to a wider audience. Many of them are stylistically different from the rest of Bušs’ creative work.
“I wish I could paint more. Paint and paint, yes, only paint!â€
