Biography

Russian painter Sergejs Masļakovs was born on October 12, 1928, into a working-class family in Rīga. He studied painting at the Janis Rozentāls Art School, graduating in 1948, and then continued his studies at the Art Academy of Latvia in the monumental painting studio led by Professor Oto Skulme (1889–1967), completing his studies in 1954.
Masļakovs worked at the “Māksla” factory and the decorative and applied arts factory. He was actively involved in the art scene – from 1962 to 1965, he served as director of the Unified Administration of Art Museums and Exhibitions.
The artist died on October 3, 1979, in Rīga.[1]

Artistic style

Masļakovs’ work was primarily focused on figurative painting, especially historical themes and interpretations of the youth of his time. He also painted portraits, including self-portraits, landscapes, and applied graphics.
His works are distinguished by a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of tonal painting.[2]
