Dagnija Čerevičņika

ā€œThe Sphinx is one of the most enigmatic mythological images. I am fascinated by its symbolic interpretation in world culture and its importance in human destiny.ā€

The artist’s works are connected by the image of the Sphinx and the aesthetics of symbolist painting of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, inspired by the work of artists such as Arnold Bƶcklin and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The Sphinx is a mythological image symbolizing intelligence, wisdom, mystery, and enigma; it guards the world and can also bring death and destruction. Gustave Moreau, Franz von Stuck, and Jan Toorop realized this image in their works. The Sphinx fascinated the artist as a mythological image and an architectural element often used in the facades of Art Nouveau buildings in Riga.

Dagnia Čerevičņika (1974) graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia, Department of Painting (2001). She has organized three solo exhibitions, participated in art competitions, and was one of the eight finalists in the XI competition exhibition dedicated to the Spanish artist Ernesto Goday in Pontevedra, Spain.

The artist’s works have been presented several times at the FestiArte Art Fair, Marabell, Spain. She participated in the Watercolor Biennale in Belgrade, Serbia, and the BI AMT Miniature Art Biennale, Timisoara, Romania. Her works have been exhibited at HLS Gallery, London, UK; Galerii Kunstiruum, Tallinn, Estonia; and Museo Museo de AlcalĆ” de GuadaĆra, Seville, Spain. Her works are in private collections in Latvia, Germany, Spain, Russia, Georgia, France, Estonia, Finland, Singapore, USA, the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Timisoara, Romania, and the Museo de Arte ContemporĆ”neo Mayte SpĆnola, Marmolejo, Spain.
