Meldra Bula

ā€œI paint so you want to put a ladder and get into the painting, just to wander around in it to see what else is there.ā€

The central theme of the artist's works is nature. The paintings were created over different periods. The author depicts fragmentary or stylized landscapes, emphasizing some element of nature and focusing on the transition from reality to her subjective vision. In addition to landscapes, the author also works in the portrait genre. In her works, the artist tries to express to the viewer the feelings that were present at the moment of painting. She works in the alla prima technique on plein air and creates works in the studio that require a longer period of time. Independently of the chosen technique, the artist strives to convey a sense of the moment and give it a lasting meaning. Meldra Bula draws on the traditions of realism and works in classical painting media. She believes an artwork should be without frames, thus opening it up and allowing each person to define its boundaries.

Artist Meldra Bula (1996) graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia, Department of Painting (2022). She organized two solo exhibitions at the Riga Central Library and participated in group exhibitions: ā€œMākslas dienas 2023. Atspulgs. Atmiņaā€ (ā€œArt Days 2023. Reflection. Memoriesā€), which took place in the exhibition hall of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, Riga, Latvia; the 4th International Biennale dedicated to the maritime theme ā€œMarÄ«na 2023. ÅŖdensdievam uz pleciemā€ (ā€œMarina 2023. On the Shoulders of Water Godā€), Jurmala, Latvia; ā€œMāksla. Izklaide. Rudens 2023. Izolācija. Bailes. NovērÅ”anās. Ideālu demontāžaā€ (ā€œArt. Entertainment. Fall 2023. Isolation. Fear. Avoidance. Dismantling Idealsā€) in the exhibition hall of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, Riga, Latvia. The artist has been nominated several times for the Jāzeps PÄ«goznis Award for ā€œLatvian Landscape Paintingā€. Three of her works are part of the Preiļi Museum of History and Applied Art collection.
